Blue alarm clock next to bold text reading ‘Deadline Ahead,’ representing the approaching end-of-support deadline for Windows 10 that businesses must prepare for.

Microsoft will officially end support for Windows 10 on October 14, 2025. While your computers will continue to run after this date, they will no longer receive free security updates, bug fixes, or technical support from Microsoft.

That means your systems will still function, but without ongoing protection—and that creates serious risks for your business.

Why This Matters to Business Owners

  1. Security Threats: Once updates stop, Windows 10 machines will become increasingly vulnerable to viruses, ransomware, and other cyberattacks. Outdated systems are prime targets for hackers, and compromised devices can put your company’s entire network at risk.

  2. Software & Application Issues: Many software providers update their applications to work with the latest operating systems. As Windows 10 becomes outdated, some programs may run poorly—or stop working altogether.

  3. Compliance Concerns: Businesses handling sensitive data (such as financial, health, or client information) may face compliance violations if they continue using unsupported software. That could lead to penalties or even legal trouble.

What Are Your Options?

Not every Windows 10 device can upgrade to Windows 11. Microsoft has strict hardware requirements, and if your PC doesn’t meet them, you’ll see an error message when you attempt to install the update.

If that happens, you still have choices:

  • Purchase a new Windows 11-compatible PC

  • Enroll in Microsoft’s Extended Security Updates (ESU) program

  • Consider alternative operating systems, like Linux

  • Ignore the deadline (not recommended—this puts your business at risk!)

⚠️ No matter which path you choose, always back up your data first. Backing up ensures you don’t lose files during the transition.

Extended Security Updates (ESU) for Windows 10

For those not ready to move on, Microsoft offers an Extended Security Updates program as a temporary measure.

Here’s what you need to know:

  • ESU is available for one year after October 14, 2025.

  • Cost: $30 or 1,000 Microsoft Reward points.

  • Free option: Enable Windows Backup and sync settings/files to OneDrive (free up to 5GB, with paid options for more storage).

  • Important: You must sign up before October 14, 2025 to qualify.

While ESU buys you some time, it’s not a long-term solution. It should only be used as a bridge until you can upgrade.
